Hello Kate, I see this marriage certificate is for Dewsbury which was heavily involved in the wool weaving trade. Carding machines which draw the raw wool out into threads for spinning would have been in use here. I suspect a card cleaner was responsible for keeping those parts of the machine likely to have become entangled clear. The chances is are this was a dangerous job with moving parts not being stopped while they were cleaned.

Yes, I would imagine it was a very dangerous job. And not just the machinery, but the fibres too – I gather lung problems were very common.
